First Sakura of 2009
The first cherry blossoms of 2009 have bloomed in Okinawa. Sakura! Sakura! Sakura ga saita! Here are some pictures from last weekend of a trip to the two sakura festivals in Nago, Okinawa - one is at Mt. Yaekade and the other is at Nakijin Castle.
The sakura at Mt. Yaedake were at about 75%.

The only place you might see Sakura in March is Okinawa...and even then probably only at the very end. April is more the time to travel to Japan if you want to see the Sakura. Try a different place than Tokyo to avoid the tourist trap factor. Yamaguchi is a good place to check along ichinosaka river or Hiroshima where you can also get a glimpse of war an atomic bomb can do. Duality helps to understand the extremes.
Are you sure these are cherry blossoms? They look like plum blossoms.
These are cherry blossoms from Okinawa, which are a different kind of Sakura than those on the mainland. For example, the ones on the mainland fall as individual petals, while those in Okinawa fall as a whole flower.

Great photos, but they do look a little more like plum than cherry...not that there is a big difference.
For mainland Japan, the best time to view cherry blossoms is usually in April. Though with the weather warming up this year it might come late march.
Yes, Okinawan sakura are the Taiwan or Formosa Cherry, which is a different species than the ones on the mainland. They look different, as you mention, being darker than the light pink/white ones commonly seen on mainland Japan.
The petals also fall in a different way. In general, mainland sakura fall petal-by-petal, while Okinawan sakura tend to fall as the whole flower.
