Yona Yona Ale is the best Japanese beer I have had, though Tokyo Black could be a toss up!
I didn't think too much of any Japanese beer. I sure like Awamori though.
Awamori is great...especially the aged ku-su! One of my favorites is sennen no hibiki, which is aged in wood barrels, as opposed to ceramic pots, that give it a whiskey color oakey finish.
It looks like the best Japanese according to users are:
1) Asahi
2) Sapporo
3) Kirin
Sapporo beer is not that popular among Japanese living in the mainland although the popularity of the Sapporo beer is quite high in Hokkaido area. In the mainland Asahi and Kirin are the most popular, given the price; that is, most people would favour Suntory's premium malts if the price is exactly same as the above-mentioned two popular beer.
In any case, talking about my personal preference, yonayona ale is the best one that I have ever had in my life, excluding the foreign kinds of beer.
Sapporo Premium is best in my opinion. Lovely and creamy, mmmm!

I do not get to have it often but Yona Yona is a damn good beer my friends. It is a little pricey but well with it when you can get it.
yebisu is my fav, i spent a month in japan and tried most beers - this one is the smoooooooooooothest.
I lived in Japan for a year and a half. I tried every beer I could get my hands on and loved them all. Kirin Ichiban was my mainstay the one day the neighborhood market had this interesting looking product called Yona Yona and that was it, that was all I drank for the remainder of my stay.
My wife is now Japanese and she called the company to ask how to get it in the States and they said not possible. Oh well, it's a good reason to go back and see the in-laws.
I have tried Asahi, Kirin and Otaru. I love Otaru the most among Japanese beer.
